Crab Soup Cook-off Set For September 6th

Admiral Heights is hosting the First Annual Ultimate Crab Soup Cook-off.  We are inviting the region's best restaurants to compete for the best crab soup in the land.  We are raising funds to better the health of Weems Creek and for the Lighthouse Shelter.  The event will take place on the grounds of Navy-Marine Corp Stadium from 11AM to 6PM.  We need volunteers to assist with the planning and the day of the event.  If you are interested in being a part of this new event, please send an e-mail to Cook-off.

More information may be found at www.CrabSoupCookOff.com

What's Happening to Grauls?

grauls.gif

This seems to be the most asked question from our neighbors lately, and many of you will be happy to learn that your AHIA Board of Directors have taken pro-active measures to work with the City of Annapolis, surrounding neighborhoods, and the developer to find a reasonable solution to this development.  We have helped to reform the Ward 2 Citizens Coalition to address this issue, and we hope to have more news as it develops.  The Board of Directors has written a letter to the City of Annapolis Director of Planning and Zoning, Jon Arason.  Details of this development may be viewed at the following website:

Update: We have spoken to the architect and the owner of the West Annapolis Shopping Center.  At this time, there are no plans for the site.  They are simply in an "exploritory" mode to learn about the feasibility of concepts for the property.  They assure us that our feedback and input will be vital the success of any development of this site.

Cowhide Branch Restoration Gets Public Funding

Img32.png

In The Capital Newspaper, the State and County recently announced the funding of Cowhide Branch, which drains into Weems Creek.  Overall, the project will cost $2.5 million and will help to control run-off from the Jennifer Road region.  You can read more about the plan here:

Dredge Weems Creek?

Img47.png

Admiral Heights is fortunate to be a waterfront community, but over the years, the size of Weems Creek has diminished to today's current state.  We believe that this is from run-off due to continued construction in the Weems Creek watershed.  At the March General Membership meeting, it was decided that the AHIA will explore the possibility of having the creek dredged so that the residents may have better access to the waterways.  Homes that used to have clear water access are now in danger of losing their waterfront status due to the creek's shrinking size.  Some homeowner's docks are no longer accessible by boat.  If you would like to be included in this discussion with the authorities and volunteer to assist, please contact Tom DeKornfeld.

TIMBER! Before You Saw, Know The Law

Img23.png

One of the attractions of living in Annapolis - and, specifically, Admiral Heights - is our many tree-lined streets and shady yards. While gutter cleaning and leaf raking chores may sometimes sour us on having so many trees, we all enjoy the practical and aesthetic benefits from our community’s trees. In order to preserve these benefits throughout the City, regulations in Section 14.12.095 of the City Code have for many years established a "tree conservation area" in which certain trees on private property are protected from unapproved removal. The rules apply to trees that are more than 5 inches in diameter at chest height and are located within a private property’s front, side, or rear zoning setbacks that are adjacent to public property. A no-fee permit from the City Department of Neighborhood and Environmental Programs (DNEP) is required before any of these trees is removed. The Code lists the common conditions under which a permit will be issued. Significantly, the rules also provide for a $500 fine for each tree removed in violation of this Section.
